Hematology is a medical specialty that focuses on treatment, and prevention of diseases of the blood and bone marrow as well as of the immunologic, blood clotting and vascular systems collectively known as Hematologic diseases.
Conditions treated:
- Anemia (iron deficiency, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiencies)
- Thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts)
- Leukopenia (low white cell counts)
- Blood clot disorders (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)
- Coagulation disorders (hemophilia, Von Willebrand Disease, platelet dysfunction disorders)
- Leukemia (acute or chronic)
- Lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
- Myeloproliferative disorders (Polycythemia vera, essential thrombocytosis, idiopathic myelofibrosis)
