Cardiology is the field of Medicine that focusses on the heart. Cardiology deals with the prevention, and treatment of heart disease. There are many subspecialties of cardiology focused on the following:
- Preventive cardiology (management of risk factors for heart disease including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, lifestyle management of smoking, healthy eating habits, exercise, etc..)
- Interventional cardiology manages coronary artery disease (blockages of coronary arteries) and patients with myocardial infarctions
- Valvular heart disease (valve stenosis and regurgitation)
- Cardiac imaging:
- Echocardiography
- Nuclear imaging
- Cardiac CT
- cMRI
- Heart Failure manages patients with weak muscle of the heart and fluid overload
- Cardiac Electrophysiology manages cardiac rhythm abnormalities
