Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a modality that uses highly concentrated oxygen gas under a set pressure . Usually a patient is placed in a specialized chamber or tank in which pressurized oxygen is inhaled for approximately 90 minutes for a minimum of 20 sessions. This allows oxygen to be dissolved in the blood and delivered more readily to areas of the body with low levels of oxygen and also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in those areas thus enhancing the chances of tissue healing.
This therapy is applied in the following wounds:
- Pressure Diabetic Ulcers
- Crush injuries
- Failing skin grafts
- Chronic Osteomyelitis (bone infections)
- Osteradionecrosis of the jaw (complication of radiation to oral cancers)
- Soft tissue radiation injuries (complication of radiation to skin cancer, prostate and colon)
